(A 'Printing a Lion' series continuation)
"Face to Face" is more than just a visual exploration; it's a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and resilience. Emerging from a simple sketch capturing the unwavering gaze of a lion, this piece has evolved through various forms, mirroring my own internal struggles and aspirations. The lion's symbol of strength and power initially drew me in, reflecting my own quest for confidence and self-assurance.
From the initial sketch to the woodblock carving, each step of the process was imbued with personal significance. As I carved the image into wood, I felt a connection to the material, as if I were carving out my own insecurities and doubts along with the lion's fierce visage. Printing the image onto rice paper gave it a tangible presence, transforming it from a mere sketch into a physical embodiment of my innermost thoughts and emotions.
After a period of dormancy, the "Face to Face" series resurfaced with renewed purpose and vigor. Embracing digital technology, I refined and reimagined the composition, adding geometric overlays inspired by Japanese woodblock printmaking. These overlays not only added visual complexity but also served as a metaphor for the layers of self-discovery and growth that I experienced throughout the process.
At its core, "Face to Face" is a reflection of my own journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment. The direct confrontation between the viewer and the lion, mirrored by my own face, serves as a reminder of the courage it takes to confront one's vulnerabilities head-on. Through this piece, I invite viewers to embark on their own journey of self-discovery, embracing the complexities of their identity and finding strength in their authenticity.
